Background of Directorate of Graduate Training (DGT)
In 1994 Makerere University Council approved the establishment of a School of Postgraduate Studies, which later became Directorate of Research and Graduate Training. Effective January 2025, it was transformed into the Directorate of and Graduate Training (DGT). The Directorate plays a key role in coordinating and promoting graduate studies through innovation in teaching and learning that responds to the changing environment, ensuring the quality of graduate programs.
Our Vision – A leader in research and graduate training in the region
Mission – To coordinate, monitor and provide an enabling environment for quality graduate studies and research to meet the changing needs of society and for sustained development
Objectives – Improve the quality of research and training; increase the number of graduates in the Humanities and Social Sciences; increase the number and quality of programmes and innovations; increase the number of graduates with gender knowledge and skills; enhance knowledge transfer partnerships;
The goals are to enhance sharing of human and financial resources; establish and promote global networks of graduate studies and promote internationalization and interdisciplinary collaborations

Specific Functions & Responsibilities of DGT
- Coordinate and administer all matters related to postgraduate studies
- Advertise graduate programs to the public to create awareness and to meet demand
- Admission of students to graduate programs
- Develop and maintain a database of students’ records and thus coordinating graduate training and documenting graduate records
- Assessment ensuring quality of graduate programs
- Streamline, review and reform, if necessary, regulations, procedures and practices in order to provide a conducive environment for graduate training and innovative research at Makerere
- Monitoring of quality and coordinating examinations and programs development from teaching units
- Awarding degrees, PhDs and postgraduate diplomas to graduate students
- Provide both postgraduate students and supervisors a home that gives them sense of belonging to a meaningful scholarly community
- Undertake any other relevant activity that is pertinent to graduate studies and research so as to promote and improve the quality of scholarship in Makerere University
